According Katie Higgins the Fells Point is the best neighborhood in Baltimore. "I lived in Butcher's Hill for four years and Fells for seven. I like Fells much better," she says. As a real estate agent, Katie says she loves most of Baltimore's neighborhoods but its Fells Point that stole her heart.
The neighborhood's close proximity to Whole Foods and its smorgasbord of restaurants, boutiques and bars means that it is truly a walking neighborhood, something Katie says she really appreciates.
"I move my car when I have to. I walk to Whole Foods. My office is on the square. I bartend in Fells Point one night a week and I walk there. Most of my friends, restaurants, everything is in Fells Point. I venture out of the neighborhood and drive to the gym, the Canton Club, but that's a new phenomenon for me," Katie says.
Friends joke with her that she "has to get out of the '34'," referring to the neighborhoods 21234 zip code but Katie says its tough.
"I know all the bartenders. I know all the store owners. I know everybody and it's just easy. I have a total feeling of community there. I know all my neighbors. One of my best friends lives just a block from me," she explains.
Eat and Drink
Katie goes out nearly every night of the week but says there are certain places she loves to hit on particular days.
"I love Kali's Court for a very special occasion. Cinghale has deals on wine on Tuesdays, I think it's half-price. I like brunch at Miss Irene's. I'm a big bruncher," she explains.
She heads to the Kitchen at Peter's Inn "whenever I can." Just outside the neighborhood, Katie says she goes to Anabelle Lee Tavern, One-Eyed Mike's and the summer concerts at Patterson Park.
Nightlife
On Fridays and Saturdays it's all about barhopping. I love the Cat's Eye Pub for live music. Love to go to Friends [at Fells Point Bar] and check it out. It's very local, really dark and there're weirdoes lurking around, but they're my friends," she says.
When other friends question this transplanted southern sorority girl about her "weirdo friends" she tells them, "that's the great thing about Fells Point. It's such a melting pot with yuppie types and hipster types and dirty types. It's sort of like to each his own here."
Living in Fells Point, Katie says she knows where to go on what nights. Max's on Broadway is a definite weeknight stop because its "too crowded on the weekend."
Bad Decisions hosts regular tweetups and their flaming drinks are a lot of fun.
Shopping
When it's time for a little retail therapy, Katie slips into Urban Chic for some fashionable gear." I love the jewelry at South Moon," she adds. The Saturday morning Farmer's Market is a must stop for fresh produce.
People ask Katie frequently what keeps her in the city and whether it's a boy. "Baltimore is the boy. I just love this city," she exclaims.
