Nate Mook loves living in Harbor East. While the neighborhood may not have the same sense of history as those that border it, he says Harbor East still offers the charms for which Baltimore has earned its name while at the same time providing the sort of living experience you might normally associate with New York or a more sophisticated area.
"Everything in Harbor East is so easily accessible," he says. "I can walk or ride my bike to everything I need."
It was the neighborhood's ultra walkability that got Nate to move there from Fells Point, in the first place. Specifically, it was the arrival of the Whole Foods grocery story that did it for him. Getting to the Safeway in Canton involved a rather long walk, so when the socially conscious grocer opened up shop in Harbor East, Nate says he had to take a look at the neighborhood. He liked what he saw, so he moved there.
Uniquely Baltimore
Being able to go out for a run or bike around the Harbor from Harbor East to Locust Point or up to Canton is a big bonus for Nate. The neighborhoods proximity to Downtown, Federal Hill, Fells Point, Canton and South Baltimore means that if you can't fnd it in Harbor East, its within easy walking or riding distance.
Nate says he enjoys the
Landmark Theater the most.
Piedigrotta, a local bakery, is always a good place to stop.
Despite its unconventional appearance, at least for a Baltimore neighborhood, Nate says Harbor East has a real sense of communuty. "There are a lot of activities, like the Italian car show a few weeks ago and the Thursday Farmer's Market that help bring the community together," he says.
