Wellness 2.0: Online Communities In the Face of Chronic Illness

New Media has always been only as important as its users make it. Certainly there's marginal value in a Twitter post about a great new restaurant or a Facebook pic of a birthday party. Such things, however, do little to add lasting value. In Baltimore and elsewhere there are people facing serious health troubles and finding in blogs, Facebook, and other online outlets a chance to build communities that wouldn't have been possible a decade ago. Here, Bmore Media's Katharine Schildt tracks down some of their stories.

Witness G. Krug & Son, a stalwart Baltimore manufacturer with roots dating back to the nineteenth century and a solid grasp on what it'll take to keep thriving in a new economy.

Even when he was still in business school, Kwame Kuadey knew that a slow climb up the corporate ladder wasn't for him. He knew that some day, when the right opportunity presented itself, he'd go off on his own. Today his startup, GiftCardRescue, has seven employees in Ellicott City and is poised to continue growing. And Kuadey did it all without a dollar of venture capital.

Audio Feature: The Voices of Northeast Market

Today, in partnership with WYPR's The Signal, we present a companion piece: an audio feature that allows you to hear directly from some of the folks featured in the original article as they discuss their life and business.

Portrait, Artist: Baltimore's Erin Fitzpatrick

Between reality TV and social networking, between the Royal Wedding and the Jersey Shore, people watching is all the rage. If that trend seems like perhaps it's not always a good thing that's because it isn't. But it doesn't have to be that way. Meet Baltimore artist Erin Fitzpatrick, who uses the age-old form of portraiture to turn people watching into an art form -- literally and figuratively.

Letter From the Editor: May, 2011

May's Letter From the Editor addresses opportunity. With the Great Recession seemingly coming to an end, America seems poised to bounce back -- as we always have in the past. Will we do so with an eye on building something better? Or will we repeat the mistakes of the past? That's up to us to decide.

Video: Gaming at UMBC

The video game industry may not be Maryland's equivalent of film in Los Angeles or country music in Nashville, but it is a force. Companies such as Zynga, Firaxis, Big Huge Games, and Day 1 Studios are all based here and are responsible for some of the industry's most interesting titles. We're also lucky to have a robust gaming program at UMBC, where students on the creative and technical ends of the game creation process learn side-by-side how to conceptualize and create the games of tomorrow.
