Whartscape music festival exemplifies Baltimore's indie music scene

Rock? Check. Hip-Hop? Check. Country? Check. Corporate sponsor? No way! Whartscape music festival puts the "indie" in independent with its no corporations allowed attitude. Why would a small group of music lovers decide to organize an all volunteer multi-day music festival featuring hundreds of bands?

In the 'hood: Station North Arts District

The name says it all and with the Maryland Institute College of Art just down the street, it's no wonder that Station North was the first neighborhood in the city to receive the state's designation as an arts district. It is one of the most vibrant locations in Baltimore with an ever-growing community of artists helping to fuel the area's cultural and economic revitalization. So, we decided to take a closer look.

Great cities have great art and Buck Jabaily wants to share Baltimore's greatness with the world

We know Charm City has art. You know this is a city full of creative types, too. Buck Jabaily knows it as well. And, if he has his way, the world will soon know it, too, as Baltimore takes its  rightful place as one of the premier arts cities on the East Coast.

For art lovers this is a huge week as Baltimore hosts the Americans for the Arts Half-Century Summit. And, this weekend will be mucho caliente as the weather heats up and the city celebrates the 30th annual Latino Fest!

It's happening in Bmore! June 15-21

It's another week filled with fun and interesting events in Charm City! We're excited about the African-American Heritage Festival that attracts crowds from all over the Mid-Atlantic region with its lineup of nationally known performers. Pride Baltimore also takes place this weekend holding its 35th annual celebration of Baltimore's GLBT community. But before we get to the weekend, OSI-Baltimore takes on a serious topic with its new forum series on "Arrests in Schools"  that starts tonight.

New high school aims to help students design their future

What high school did you go to? It's the question that separates the natives from the transplants in Baltimore. For decades, the answers have included Poly, Western, City, Douglas, Dunbar, Mervo and others. Starting in 2011, lucky Bmore teens with an eye for design will add a new name to the list.

What's on tap for the coming week? How about a taste of Baltimore's top winemakers, beer brewers and chefs. As if that wasn't enough, there's another free way to get from here to there as the Charm City Circulator adds a new route.

Women Taking the Lead -- PNC's Watchen Harris Bruce

Watchen Harris Bruce has only lived in Baltimore for a few years, but in that time she's started a non-profit to help those with mental illness find a place in the workforce and been appointed the Commissioner for Liberia to the Governor's Commission on African Affairs. And, as though that wasn't enough, she's the assistant vice president and community development advisor at PNC Bank. We managed to catch up with Bruce, though it wasn't easy keeping up with her.

Structurally sound -- Bmore area sculptor melds architecture and art

By day Adam Scott Cook lives inside the button-downed, carefully thought out and illustrated lines of an architecture firm. After 5 p.m. a welder's mask replaces the tie freeing Cook to let his creativity run amok, piecing together sculptures replete with Baltimore's history.

The mark of a great civilization is in part measured by its art. The same holds true for great cities. Michael Owen, a MICA graduate is doing his part to make Baltimore great with murals scattered throughout the city. He's dubbed his campaign the Baltimore Love Project.

Fencing for Loot

When their hopes to try to break a Guinness World Record fell through, The Cheasapeake Fencing Club didn't cry touche. Instead club members will lift their epees, foils and sabres and take on as many opponents as they can in what they've dubbed the Megabout.

Lights! Camera! Baltimore!

It doesn't take a multi-million dollar budget to be a good filmmaker. It does take vision, passion and a compelling talent for story-telling. Just ask John Waters. Or better yet, ask Matt Porterfield. With Baltimore as his backdrop, Porterfield is earning top marks in the indie film scene for his portrayal of working-class Baltimoreans. Our Julekha Dash sat down with Porterfield as he prepares for the Md. Film Festival.
