TOTW: Spring in ur tweets

After a record-breaking amount of snow this winter as the calendar turns to March, we're waiting for spring to arrive with wide open arms...

@DavidMTaylor is ready to, he's started to countdown, "Spring is less than 3 weeks away..."

While we wait though here're a few tweets for thought...

@daracooks, "Who will be Maryland's best chef, best restaurant, best bar? It is up to you to vote now http://ow.ly/1cF6L"

Why support @BmoreFiber? @gdeems says, "35% of American adults, 80 million people, do not have high-speed Internet access in their homes, according to new FCC broadband report."

PETA strips down to its skivvies against fur in Bmore

In case you missed it, here's a peek at the recent protest People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) staged outside of Lexington Market last week. Wearing little more than bunny ears, cotton tails, and signs reading, "Only Animals Should Wear Fur," a pair of PETA beauties handed out leaflets urging people to cross fur off their shopping lists. The leaflets explained why buying and wearing fur supports one of the cruelest industries on the planet.

Part of PETA effort to inform consumers about how rabbits and other animals on fur farms spend their entire lives in cramped, filthy cages before they are killed by poisoning, gassing, anal electrocution, or neck-breaking. Animals trapped for fur suffer excruciating pain before trappers stomp on their chests or break their necks. In Chinawhich is now the world's leading fur exporteranimals, including cats and dogs, are sometimes skinned alive.

"I'll gladly bare my skin in the cold if it will help save animals' skins," says naked "bunny" Amanda Fortino. "With so many stylish and toasty alternatives to fur available, there's no excuse for harming a hair on a real bunny's back."

BWI gets top marks in two customer satisfaction surveys

No matter how you feel about the airlines, apparently the folks over at Maryland's BWI airport at least leave passengers feeling good as the prepare to board the airplane or claim their bags and go, according to two recent surveys.

Here's an excerpt:

"Talk about flying the friendly skies -- or not. The D.C. area boasts three major airports in the region, but only one of them is nationally ranked in the top 10 for customer satisfaction, according to a new survey.

The ranking comes courtesy of J.D. Power and Associates. It names Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport as seventh in medium-sized airports."

Here's an excerpt:

"Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is the best airport of its size in the world, according to a survey by Airports Council International.

BWI ranked No. 1 for airports serving 15 million to 25 million passengers in the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) 2009 survey released Wednesday. The airport led the list of the top five mid-size airports, finishing ahead of Taipei, Shenzhen, New Delhi and Salt Lake City. In the ranking of the best airports by number of passengers served, BWI was the only U.S. airport to place first in any size category. BWI was not ranked in any category in the 2008 ASQ survey."

Huff Po investigates deceptive signs in Bmore

The Huffington Post Investigative Fund has launched an investigation into what it calls "Hard Times Profiteers," scammers who post signs throughout metropolitan areas offering help with foreclosures, home sales, etc. Reporters headed to D.C. first, but now have posted a video by Robert Strupp, director of research and policy at the Community Law Center.

Here's an excerpt:

"Drive through most any city in America and the offers will leap out at you: "Repair Your Credit!" "Modify Your Loan!" "Sell Your House Quick!"

Maryland entrepreneur scores big with innovative dog bed design

You could say that Mike Harding is now the cat's meow for dogs. The Glen Burnie, MD-based entrepreneur is, after a few setbacks, apparently a rising star in the pet bed industry.

Here's an excerpt:

"Hard times for Mike Harding led to dogs around the world resting comfortably.

Harding got laid off from his Wall Street firm in 1987, and it was that setback that led him to start his own company Kuranda Dog Beds in Glen Burnie, The Capital in Annapolis reported yesterday."

Celebrate Black History Month with Annapolis tour

Annapolis has more to offer than its rich maritime history. According to the Washington Post Maryland's capitol city is also replete with history about African-Americans during the Colonial era.

Here's an excerpt:

"Annapolis, with its narrow, cobbled streets overlooking the water, its cute boutiques and taverns, and its historic state Capitol and impressive U.S. Naval Academy, provides for a great Washington escape, even in the bleakness of winter. But during Black History Month, Annapolis also provides a great African American history lesson.

On a two-hour guided walking tour of the town, you'll learn what it was like to be black in Annapolis in the 1750s. Slaves were often sold in the back of Reynolds Tavern or Middleton Tavern, two bars that exist today. Slaves bought fresh produce at the market by the water. They had to attend St. Anne's Church (which still stands) with their owners and had to sit in the back."

Take a ride on the Charm City Circulator

Been wondering what to expect with the Charm City Circulator, Baltimore's new free and green shuttle service? Adam Van Bavel, a contender for the 10th district city council seat in Baltimore, went for a ride and took his camera along.

Snomageddon gives Baltimore the lead for Golden Snow Globe award

The nearly 50 inches of snow dumped on Baltimore between this month has put Charm City in the lead for a dubious honor - the Golden Snow Globe.

Here's an excerpt:

"I just did a full update and if the stats are right Baltimore is now king of the snow mountain. Just typing that made me have to take another look at the stats. A city from Maryland, the state that has one of my favorite vacation places (Ocean City) that on average has about a foot of snow at this time is leading if my stats are correct. I'm loving it Ummm, as long as they don't hold the lead for too long that is ."

TOTW: A winter wonderland

After a historical snowfall totaling more than 49 inches largely from two blizzards that hit within the same week, Baltimore's twitterati had a bad case of cabin fever and seemed more than a little over the white stuff...

Following the end of Son of Snopocalypse, the Gov made this request and we'd like to second the notion, @GovernorOMalley, "Help our small biz hit hard by this week's storms and cure your cabin fever at the same time by shopping & eating at your local businesses."

Just to keep it fresh in our minds, @froylance offers this "A street of Baltimore rowhouses is inundated with snow. Weekend "Snowpocalypse" in time lapse video. http://bit.ly/c6KzsI"

@Will_Burns may have had too much snow, "This is my shovel. There are many like it, but this one is mine ... My shovel without me, is useless. Without my shovel I am useless."

@kimthewriter says, "Just saw Al Gore in a survival suit, leading a leashed polar bear across the tundra where my yard used to be."

And a fun snow fact as of Saturday from @stephbaltimore, "70% of the United States is covered by snow right now.(According to WJZ.)"

Rawlings-Blake makes The Grio's top 100 list

In office less than two weeks, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has made "The Grio's" list of 100 history makers in the making. Other notables on the list include, Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts , musician Will.i.am, Newark,N.J. Mayor Cory Booker,
Quincy Jones and newsman Lester Holt.

Here's an excerpt:

"Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's installation as mayor of Baltimore on February 4 will be the latest in a series of political accomplishments for the 39-year-old lawyer. "She is a leader that we need right now," Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) told voters in a video clip announcing his support for Rawlings-Blake last year.

"We are at a very difficult crossroads in Baltimore's history. Baltimore is changing... We need a leader who can truly lead... I support her because she is experienced and she is prepared for the moment," Said Cummings

Indeed, Rawlings-Blake has spent a lifetime preparing to lead Baltimore, a city of approximately 640,000. Her climb to the mayor's seat started at age 7 when she knocked on doors to help her father, the late Maryland legislator Howard "Pete" Rawlings, campaign for office."

For Bowie woman third times the charm for "Amazing Race"

What's that saying? "Try, try and try again." Well for Bowie, Md resident Shawne Morgan and her friend Monique Pryor the old adage holds true. The two College Park grads got a chance to see the world via CBS' hit reality contest.

Here's an excerpt:

"No matter how ingrained reality television shows have become in popular culture, the reality is that it's still pretty hard to get a spot on one.

Just ask Bowie resident Shawne Morgan. The first two times she tried to get on "The Amazing Race," she didn't make it."
